The Modi government has restored prime plots of land in Delhi to 26 religious and socio-cultural institutions, most of them linked to the BJP and RSS.

The BJP-led government headed by Atal Bihari Vajpayee had made 225 allotments during its term to RSS affiliated institutions.

Later the UPA government had formed a committee under former bureaucrat Yogesh Chandra to look at all 225 allotments. The panel did not touch 125 allotment which were related to government and political institutions, but recommended cancellation of 32 of them. It identified remaining 100 as having benefited for political reasons.

The list went back and forth between ministries of urban development and law, and the attorney general’s office, before it was frozen at 29. As soon as this was made public, 26 institutions approached the Delhi High Court and got a stay while three decided to return the plots, reports Economic Times.

The Modi government formed two-member committee that scrapped the UPA government recommendations and restored the allocations.

The committee also suggested returning the plots surrendered by the other three that didn’t go to the court.

The Economic Times accessed the list of organisations that have been reallotted lands in Delhi affiliated to the RSS or linked to the BJP or its student wing Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad, along with other spiritual groups close to the ruling government.
