Mufti Mohammad Sayeed likely to get Padma Vibhushan
His daughter Mehbooba Mufti, now Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir, continues the alliance with BJP.
Almost a year after his death on January 7, Mufti Mohammad Sayeed is likely to be honoured with the Padma Vibhushan.
The Hindu reported quoting its sources that in the highest category of Padma or civilian honours given away on Republic Day, a plan is indeed afoot to honour Sayeed. However, it requires the Union government’s formal assent before being sent to the Rashtrapati Bhavan for approval.
The award is significant in that the late Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir had struck an alliance with the BJP to form a government in the State after the 2015 elections yielded a fractured mandate. He was twice Chief Minister, the first time between 2002 and 2005 and the second time between March 2015 and January 2016. His daughter Mehbooba Mufti, now Chief Minister, continues the alliance.
“It will be one year since Mufti Saheb passed away, and this is a way in which we to want mark the occasion. The Padma Vibhushan is the highest of the Padma awards, and this will also reflect the spirit of the alliance,” said a source in Srinagar.
