Navjot Singh Sidhu fails to show up for meeting Rahul, keeps Congress guessing
Sidhu was expected to meet party vice president Rahul Gandhi, back on Tuesday after his New Year vacation, announce the decision to join the Congress
Former BJP Rajya Sabha MP and cricketer Navjot Singh Sidhu, who was reported to join the Congress on Tuesday, kept the party on dark when he remained out of communication, leaving the leaders perplexed whether the comedian had a change of heart.
According to Indian Express, Sidhu was expected to meet party vice president Rahul Gandhi, who was back on Tuesday after his New Year vacation, to announce the decision to join the Congress. People close to him told media that he would now join the party on January 13, coinciding with the Lohri festival.
Reports said that Congress is set to field Gurjit Singh Aujla, president of Amritsar rural district Congress committee, as it's candidate for Amritsar Lok Sabha by-election. The by-poll will be held simultaneously with the Assembly elections on February 4. The seat was earlier offered to Sidhu.
According to Indian Express, Congress is expecting Sidhu to join the party by January 16 when Rahul Gandhi could be travelling to China on the invitation of Communist Party of China.
Party sources said Rahul had accepted the invitation nearly six months ago.
