On the occasion of Makar Sankranti, divers have recovered 24 bodies, including that of minors, after a boat ferrying 40 capsized in the holy river of Ganga in Patna. While the search for missing persons continues, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has announced ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakhs for the next of kin of the deceased.

According to the reports, amongst those rescued six people have been admitted to the Patna Medical College and Hospital.


It is to be noted that the public had gathered at Patna's Ganga Diara to witness a three-day kite festival which is held every year on the occasion of Makar Sankranti. However, while the vessel which had taken people for a free ride from the Ganga ghat was reportedly overcrowded and capsized at around 6 pm.



According to the images by locals around the shore, rescuers could be seen diving to save the people. Locals were also seen approaching the spot on other boats to help.

Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has asked Patna District Magistrate Sanjay Kumar Aggarwal to look into the lapses that led to the incident. He has also ordered the district administration to provide compensation to the families of the dead. Aggarwal has suggested that the accident happened either due to over-crowding or mid-water collision with another country boat.

"PM expressed grief on the loss of lives caused by the boat tragedy in Bihar. He extended condolences to the bereaved families," PM's office said in a tweet. He also announced an ex-gratia from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund (PMNRF) of Rs 2 lakh for next of kin of those deceased in the boat tragedy, and Rs 50, 000 for those seriously injured in the incident.

The state government has also announced Rs 4 lakh ex-gratia payment to the family of each of the deceased.

Further festivities in the Ganga Diara area have been called off.
