In his first visit to Bihar after demonetization on Thursday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar for imposing a ban on alcohol in the state.

Addressing a public meeting to celebrate the 350th birth anniversary of Guru Gobind Singh, Modi said he wants to thank Nitish Kumar for implementing prohibition of liquor, claiming it is an inspiration to other states.



"Social change is very tough thing to forge, yet he has shown remarkable ability in implementing prohibition... if this policy is successful in Bihar, the whole country will be inspired," Modi was quoted in media reports as saying.

"In the beginning, people might face some inconvenience but taking everything into account, it would yield positive results,” Nithish said earlier backing Modi’s decision.

Attending the birth anniversary of Guru Gobind Singh together, Modi and Nitish shared stage for the first time after Nitish defeated the BJP in the assembly elections in 2015.

Returning the praise later, the Bihar CM said our Prime Minister was Chief Minister of Gujarat for 12 years and he implemented prohibition of liquor very effectively.
