Congress MP Shashi Tharoor and other senior party leaders were detained by the police in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, for protesting against demonetisation outside the RBI office in the state capital, news agency ANI reported. The protest march to the RBI turned violent as agitators hurled bottles at the police and even tried to climb atop a police vehicle, Mathrubhumi News said.
The Congress in Kerala has been staging protests against the manner in which the Centre has implemented the note ban in the country.
According to a report in The Indian Express, Tharoor had said earlier that the demonetisation exercise was implemented badly and in an ‘astonishingly incompetent manner.’
He had also criticised the government for changing goalposts frequently.
There were incidents of violence in Thiruvananthapuram and Thrissur following which the police arrested and removed the senior Congress leaders.
Opposition leader Ramesh Chennithala and KPCC president VM Sudheeran courted arrest in Thiruvananthapuram and Thrissur respectively, Mathrubhumi News reported.
The protest organised in front of Kozhikode Head Post Office was inaugurated by former Chief Minister Oommen Chandy. http://english.mathrubhumi.com/news/kerala/congress-stir-chennithala-sudheeran-court-arrestkerala-demonetisation-protest-1.1634568
