R-Day 2017: Padma honours for Kohli, Dhoni; 777 police medals,100 gallantry

Late Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed, late former Lok Sabha Speaker P.A. Sangma, late Madhya Pradesh chief minister Sunder Lal Patwah for Padma Shri will be conferred with Padma Shri.

Amid the heightened security for Republic Day celebrations, the lists for awardees in the Republic Day Parade in the national capital are being finalised.

Amongst the Padma Shri awardees are Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader Sharad Pawar and senior BJP leader Murli Manohar Joshi,  late Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed, late former Lok Sabha Speaker P.A. Sangma, late Madhya Pradesh chief minister Sunder Lal Patwah for Padma Shri.


In the sports group, Indian Cricket captain Virat Kohli will be awarded the Padma Shri. Other sportspersons to be honoured with Padma Shri include Olympian Sakshi Malik, gymnast Dipa Karmakar, Vikas Gowda for discus throw and P.R. Sreejesh for hockey.

Former-Indian Cricket Captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni and Rio Olympics silver medallist, PV Sindhu, along with chief national badminton coach, Pullela Gopichand will be conferred the Padma Bhushan, India’s third-highest civilian honour.

Among NRIs to be awarded this year are pioneering AIDS researcher Dr Suniti Solomon, surbahar artist Imrat Khan and from Nepal and Anuradha Koirala for social work.

Legendary singer K.J. Yesudas will also be accorded the second highest civilian honour Padma Vibhushan. Among journalists, film critic Bhavna Somaiya will be awarded the Padma Shri. Vishwa Mohan Bhat will be awarded the Padma Bhushan, while singer Anuradha Paudwal will be awarded the Padma Shri.

"777 personnel have been awarded police medals on the occasion of the Republic Day this year. Police Medals for Gallantry (PMG) have been awarded to 100 personnel, President's Police Medals for Distinguished Service to 80 personnel and Police Medal for Meritorious Service to 597 personnel," a statement said.

According to top government sources, the nation’s highest civilian honour, the Bharat Ratna will not be awarded this year. The awards will be officially announced this evening.
