Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi and Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav came together in Lucknow for a joint press conference on Sunday, days after announcing an electoral alliance for the upcoming Uttar Pradesh Assembly polls.
Speaking first at the conference, Rahul Gandhi said, "This Samajwadi Party-Congress partnership is an answer to the politics of division and hate. It's an alliance for progress, prosperity and peace."
Rahul and Akhilesh would launch a poll campaign with a tagline – UP ko ye Saath pasand hai (UP relishes this alliance).
The duo is expected to send out a strong message to party cadres on both sides, urging them to work together to ensure the defeat of the BJP and the BSP.
"Akhilesh Yadav and I have both political and personal relationship. The alliance has made the personal and political relationship between Akhilesh and me better," Rahul said at the conference.
Akhilesh Yadav said, "We are like two wheels of bicycle. Not much difference in age between us; today is the beginning. Rahul and I will take Uttar Pradesh ahead on the path of prosperity. The alliance is the confluence of Ganga and Yamuna out of which the Saraswati of development will come out."
He said that the alliance will answer those who made the nation stand in queues. “This is an alliance for progress and it will speed up development. We are against BJP's divide and rule plan,” Akhilesh said.
