Republic Day 2017: NSG, Tejas aircraft makes debut in parade

As India celebrates its 68th Republic Day today, the ‘black cat’ commandos of the elite counter-terror force NSG march down Rajpath today for the first time in the history of Republic Day celebrations.

The year celebration also witnessed the presence a contingent of UAE soldiers in the parade, with UAE becoming the second country after France to send its troops to participate in theRepublic Day parade of India.

President Pranab Mukherjee started the ceremony by hoisting the flag, following which the Republic Day parade began from Rajpath and will end at Red Fort. Across the states, Chief Ministers, Governors, MPs etc hoist the flag of their respective areas and participate in the parade.

The Guest of Honour for the ceremony this year is the Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who personally received the Prince at the airport, said that United Arab Emirates is India's valued partner and close ties between the two countries are important for the entire region. India and UAE have signed 13 agreements, including one on strategic cooperation.

Though Republic Day is celebrated on January 26 with the Parade on Rajpath, the celebrations are spread over three days and ends with the Beating Retreat ceremony on January 29.

PM Modi reached Amar Jawan Jyoti and paid tribute to martyrs along with three service chiefs and headed over to Rajpath to welcome President and Guest of Honour. After President hoisted the flag, Parade began in which NSG commandos marched down for the first time. There are tableaus of all the states of India which walk down the parade.

President Pranab Mukherjee will honour awardees of Padma awards and Ashoka Chakra.
