Selfie death: Man gets run over by train in Coimbatore

A 21-year-old engineering student died after he was hit by a speeding train while trying to take a selfie with the train approaching in the background in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, on Saturday past midnight, NDTV has reported.
The student was returning after celebrating New Year when the incident occurred.
Gunasekharan, a resident of Dindigul district, studying at a private college in the city's outskirt, died on the spot when he was trying to take a selfie with the train in the background using his mobile phone, police said.
The victim was hit by the train and hurled at a distance of around 100 ft, the police said.
According to a report in Washington Post, India has had far more selfie-related deaths than any other country in the world in the last two years.
Based on a study by scholars from Carnegie Mellon University and Indraprastha Institute of Information Delhi, it stated that of 127 reported selfie deaths from March 2014 to September 2016,"a whopping 76 deaths occurred in India alone”.
The most common cause of death worldwide was “falling off a building or mountain,” which was responsible for 29 deaths. The second most second-most common being hit by a train, responsible for 11 deaths.
