Borussia Dortmund suffered a set back from Benfica in Champions League last 16 first leg match as Kostas Mitroglu scored the only goal of the night in Lisbon.
Dortmund dominated the game but saw their celebrated centre-forward Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang missing a second half penalty amid a series of majestic finishes and breathtaking goalkeeping performance from Ederson of home.
Greece forward Mitriglu succeeded where Abumeyang failed, and converted a decent corner kick at 48th minute thus giving an upper hand to the underdogs into the second leg.
Both teams were without their key players including Benfica's Brazilian striker Jonas and Lisandro Lopez both reported to be injured and Andrija Zivkovic suspended. Dortmund's star player Mario Gotze, on the other hand, failed a fitness test and joined the herd of Sven Bender, Nuri Sahin and Sebastian Rode on the treatment table.
Benfica quickly showed their ferocity by Eduardo Salvio riding through the right in the opening seconds and Nelson Semedo winning an early corner.
The visitors on 11th minute produced a decent attempt to win a goal but Abumeyang gave up with his weak finish. Ousmane Dembele retained the ball from the opposition's half and spotted the team mate who was running for goal.
In the 11th minute, the visitors produced something much more clearcut but Aubameyang was let down by his finish. Dembele did well to steal possession for his side and quickly located his partner's run on goal. The Gabon forward was in a good position but failed to convert the ball and lifted it high over the crossbar.
Dembele soon became the deciding figure of the game and came close to scoring a goal after 23 minutes, where Marco Reus and Lukasz Piszczek helped in creating the chance. The shot was on target but Ederson helped by Victor Lindelof, saved the effort.
Borussia Dortmund kept the flow, Raphael Guerriero not allowing Ljubomir Fejsa to guide the ball out of play and touching the ball across goal with Ederson beaten. Abumeyang was around but couldn't produce the tiny touch to find the open net.
After the goalless first-half , Benfica came with renewed energy and took the lead just three minutes into the second half.
Lusiao headed Luis Pizzi's corner towards Mitroglu, who after his several hard-fought attempts succeeded.
The lead looked fragile as Dortmund had a chance through Abumeyang after five minutes, which he couldn't convert to goal.
Reus and Marcel Schmelzer tested Ederson several times before Fejsa's handball gave Aubameyang a shot at redemption from 12 yards. Christian Pulisic again came closer than most after coming off the bench, but a spectacular dive from Ederson denied him the chance at the 84th minute.
Pulisic's powerful but deflected shot was expected as a winner but a determinant Ederson, who was not ready to let his clean sheet slip, saved the attempt ensuring victory for Benfica against all odds.
