IPL 2017: Dhoni steps down as Captain of Rising Pune Supergiants, Steve Smith to replace him
Earlier reports claimed that IPL franchise Rising Pune Supergiants have removed Mahendra Singh Dhoni from the team's captaincy.
In a shocker before IPL auction 2017, MS Dhoni has stepped down as the Rising Pune Supergiants captain for the tenth season of the Indian Premier League.
Earlier reports claimed that IPL franchise Rising Pune Supergiants have removed Mahendra Singh Dhoni from the team's captaincy. However, Wisden India quoted its franchise source as saying that “Dhoni is a legend of Indian and world cricket, who are we to ask him to step down? He chose to step down because he wants to enjoy his cricket and play with freedom.”
M S Dhoni had stepped down as the captain of the Indian limited-overs teams a month and a half ago, and Virat Kohli was handed the reins as full-time captain. However, his decision to give up Pune captaincy came as a surprise, though, given that this could be the franchise’s last season in the IPL.
Reports have further said that Steve Smith will be the new captain for the team. Amongst other options for the captain was Faf du Plessis, however, he is likely to leave early this season due to his commitments with the South Africa team. Steve Smith, as well as Faf du Plessis, lead their national teams.
The 35-year-old former Chennai Super Kings captain Dhoni is one of the most successful captains in the history of IPL. As a skipper, Dhoni has won the IPL trophy twice and finished runner-up on four occasions as CSAK captain. Steve Smith, who is a highly experienced international captain, will take the mantle from the wicket-keeper in the upcoming season.
