Hauz Khas rape: Police arrests 1 accused

A day after rape of a girl in Delhi's posh Hauz Khas Village created a storm, the police arrested a suspect from a South Delhi locality.
The Hindustan Times report quoted Ishwar Singh, DCP(South) as saying the accused who is in his 20s, has been identified as Raja alias Jhandel and he works at a small restaurant located near the village.

“After an intense investigation, the accused has been positively identified. Various teams are raiding his probable hideouts and results are expected soon,” the police had said.
The police also recovered the iPhone the accused had snatched from the victim while fleeing after the crime. He had also snatched her wallet but dropped it while escaping. The wallet had been found from the crime spot soon after the rape was reported to the police around 2.45 am on Sunday.
The DCP expressed confidence that they had enough evidence to link him to the crime. Police suspect the blood from his head injury could be found on the victim’s clothes. “We will file the charge sheet against him within a month,” the DCP said.
Raja, a resident of nearby Arjun Vihar, used to frequently visit the Hauz Khas area at night, police said. While no previous criminal case against him has emerged so far, police are questioning him to ascertain if he was involved in similar crimes earlier.
Around 25 teams consisting of three-four members each were tasked with identifying and arresting the accused.
On Saturday night, the victim had visited Hauz Khas Village with her cousin for dinner and while returning was approached by two men who offered to drop them home.
While walking towards the car, one of the men asked the victim to accompany him to Deer Park, saying there was a dry lake he wanted to show her, RP Upadhyay, Joint CP (South-Eastern Range) had said after the incident was reported. They scaled the wall of the park and walked to the lake where the accused allegedly raped her twice.
The victim then reached the police and reported the crime, who was then sent for a medical examination and her statement was recorded.
