Tuesday night seance at Jayalalithaa memorial: Niece Deepa joins OPS at aunt

As the political tussle in AIADMK nears a dramatic end, Deepa Jayakumar, niece of former Chief Minister Jayalalithaa, joined the camp of caretaker Chief Minister O Panneerselvam.

Commenting on the Supreme Court order that convicted Sasikala over disproportionate assets case, Deepa earlier said Sasikala going to jail is very good for the cadres and people of Tamil Nadu, The Hindu reported.

Earlier, AIADMK party MLAs staying at a resort in Koovathur on Tuesday elected state highways minister Edappadi K Palanisamy as legislature party leader barely 2 hours after the Supreme Court convicted Sasikala in the disproportionate assets case.

Tamil Nadu's state highway minister Palanisamy was elected as legislature party leader to stake claim for the chief minister post after Sasikala held talks with the legislators.

Media reports suggest that Palanisamy would meet Tamil Nadu Governor Vidyasagar Rao later today and stake claim to form the Tamil Nadu government.

Meanwhile, acting chief minister O Panneerselvam has also been expelled from the primary membership of the party.

Earlier in the day, the apex court sentenced Sasikala to 4 years in jail and asked to pay a fine of Rs 10 crore.

The apex court ordered Sasikala, who was accused number 2 in the Rs 66-crore disproportionate assets case, to surrender immediately.
