Odisha: Tribal girl student

The Body of a tribal girl student found hanging in the hostel premises of Khairaput high school in Malkangiri district of Odisha on Saturday morning. The deceased identified as Sukri Dhadenga Majhi was a class VIII student of the school and a resident of Bandhaguda area in Bondaghati.

Sukri belongs to the Bonda tribe, an ancient tribal community who live in the isolated hill regions of the Malkangiri district of southwestern Odisha.

In December last year, another similar incident took place in Odisha’s Berhampur region where a body of a minor girl, identified as Manju Das, was found hanging from a tree in Poirasi village. Manju worked in a cashew-nut processing unit at Santoshpur. The minor had gone outside the unit at around 4 pm but did not return. Soon after, other workers in the unit started searching for her and found hanging from the tree.

In September last year, yet another incident shocked people of Odisha as a body of a girl student was found hanging from a ceiling fan in her hostel room in Sri University Campus in Odisha’s Cuttack district. The girl was identified as Somashree Dey, an undergraduate student in yoga discipline of the university.

Odisha has been in news for many such incidences of apathy so far. In September last year, a man was forced to carry his seven-year-old daughter’s body as the ambulance left them midway after declaring the girl had died. A week before this incident, a tribal man named Dana Majhi had to carry his wife’s body on his shoulders after he was allegedly denied an ambulance by the Kalahandi district hospital. He walked about 10 km from Bhawanipatna in Kalahandi district of Odisha along with his ailing wife and daughter.
