Sasikala Natarajan to be Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, O Panneerselvam steps down

O Panneerselvam resigns as Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, paving way for AIADMK chief VK Sasikala to become next Tamil Nadu CM.

"Chinnamma all set to become the Next Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu," AIADMK said in a tweet.

According to a report in The Times of India, AIADMK leaders said Panneerselvam proposed Sasikala's name at the meeting of AIADMK legislators."I resigned and we elected Sasikala unanimously as leader of the party

"I resigned and we elected Sasikala unanimously as leader of the party in the assembly. All MLAs are in support," said Panneerselvam.

Earlier in the day, Panneerselvam, who was appointed as CM in December last year, and other ministers of the party met Sasikala at the Poes Garden residence of late Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa where Sasikala continues to live.

The report said AIADMK legislators had not been informed about the agenda of the meeting.

The development comes at a time when late J. Jayalalithaa’s niece Deepa Jayakumar expressed that she is against the move to make Sashikala as CM. In an interview with India Today, she said that she is totally against it and neither people of Tamil Nadu are going to accept this.

“I would never imagine of something bad as this happen to the people of Tamil Nadu,” she said comparing it to be as similar as a ‘military take-over’ and not a democratic decision at all.

Deepa had, in January, made an official announcement of entering into politics on the centenary birth anniversary of AIADMK founder MG Ramachandran. She had also said, “I will make my next announcement on Jayalalithaa’s birthday.”
