Virat Kohli and Steve Smith inspire England

Joe Root says he would look to draw inspiration from Virat Kohli and Steve Smith as he embarked on his journey as England's new Test captain.

Root, 26, replaced Alastair Cook after the latter stepped down as England's most capped Test skipper.

Root hopes becoming a Test captain will take his batting to the “next level”, just as it’s done for India cricket team’s Virat Kohli and Australia cricket team’s Steve Smith.

The 26-year-old Yorkshireman already boasts an impressive batting average of nearly 53 in his 53 Tests to date.

Yet Kohli averages over 67 as captain of the India side now top of the world Test rankings compared to a shade above 41 when a player in the ranks.

The corresponding figures for Smith are equally stark, at 71 and 53 respectively.

“That excites me,” said Root at his Headingley home ground on Wednesday.

Kohli has perhaps been the most dominant batsman in world cricket since taking over as India's Test captain. He has so far scored nine hundreds including four double tons. Under Kohli, India also stormed to the top of the Test rankings and are currently on a 19-match unbeaten streak.

Smith, despite Australia's recent travails in Test cricket, has been in sensational form.
